Commissioner Sheehan Hosts High School Girls from the Office for Farmworker Ministry as Part of Take Your Daughters to Work Day
April 30, 2009

Every year, Commissioner Sheehan hosts middle- and high-school girls for tours of City Hall and provides them the opportunity to be able to observe her daily tasks as a city commissioner as part of Take Your Daughter to Work Day.  Commissioner Sheehan is pleased to participate in this worthy cause as part of The Office for Farmworker Ministry's efforts to help underprivileged girls better understand their community and interact with leaders in the area.  Sister Ann Kendrick and Sister Laura Fertel are always appreciative of the commitment Commissioner Sheehan makes to her community.

After a tour of City Hall, Commissioner Sheehan and Maria R., Wendy and Maria Z. (Florangel is behind Commissioner Sheehan) wait to cross traffic as
they head to OUC's Reliable Plaza for a tour.

Orlando Utilities Commission's new building - Reliable Plaza - is downtown Orlando's "greenest" building and largest LEED certified building.

Commissioner Sheehan and the girls listen to the beginning of a presentation by OUC staff about the environmentally friendly features of OUC's new headquarters.

The girls learn about OUC's rain barrel projects and the artwork
done by local school children.

Part of the tour included going to the roof of Reliable Plaza which is coated
with a bright, white reflective material meant to reflect and
disperse the sun's rays and make the building cooler.

All of the panels on the roof have the capacity to generate 32kW of energy
daily to help power Reliable Plaza, help the environment and reduce costs.

Commissioner Sheehan took the girls to the City of Orlando's Downtown
Information Center to show them the scale model of downtown
and the buildings - current and proposed - in Orlando.

The girls were amazed at the size of Orlando's downtown
and all of the great buildings we have.

While at the Downtown Information Center, Thomas Chatmon,
the city's Downtown Development Board Executive Director (right),
was walking by and came in to meet the girls.
