2008 Florida Coastal Clean-up a Record-Breaking Success

Coastal Cleanup520 community volunteers including groups from Walt Disney World, Coca-Cola, Eco-Action, Central Florida Pleasure Diver’s Club and the City of Orlando After School All-Stars dedicated their Saturday morning to the twenty-third annual Ocean Conservancy’s Florida Coastal Clean-Up. Volunteers helped by removing 7,200 pounds of trash and debris from the shores of seven Orlando lakes in just two hours. To date, this has been the largest community-wide cleanup event sponsored by the City of Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful.

Although Orlando is not directly located on the coastal shoreline, much of the marine debris is generated from areas many miles away. In fact, most of the debris found during past events was attributed to land based sources such as stormwater runoff from our streets, illegal dumping and general littering.

2008 Outstanding Community Leader Award

U.S. Green Building Council, Central Florida ChapterMayor Buddy Dyer was selected as the first recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Community Leader Award by the U.S. Green Building Council, Central Florida Chapter. With 43 new commercial buildings registered for LEED certification, the City of Orlando has demonstrated that this community not only supports environmentally-friendly building, but is setting the bar for the rest of the country to follow. The City’s Fire Station 15 was the first commercial building to achieve LEED certification in Orange County and the first fire station to receive this certification in the state. That is just one example of how our community is embracing green building. The Montage, Downtown’s newest residential building, is aiming for LEED silver certification and the new OUC building was designed to meet LEED gold certification. From the new Events Center to our emerging medical city that includes the new UCF Medical School and the Burnham Institute, we are truly transforming Orlando into one of the most environmentally-conscious cities in America.

101 Best of Orlando

Dubsdread Golf CourseThe results of the Orlando Sentinel’s 101 Best are here and two City of Orlando venues were honored. Dubsdread Golf Course took the title of “Best Golf Course.” Located just minutes from Downtown Orlando, Dubsdread features the oldest public course in the area. Originally designed in 1923, the City of Orlando purchased it in 1977, making it the only City-owned golf course. On July 10 of this year, Dubsdread re-opened its doors after a much needed renovation. Over the years, golfing legends such as Sam Snead, Babe Zaharias and Ben Hogan have played at Dubsdread.

Lake Eola ParkThe designation of “Best Public Park” went to Lake Eola Park. A popular destination in the heart of Downtown, many people take advantage of the beautiful surroundings to walk at lunchtime or in the evenings. Visitors to the park can coast around the lake in a swan boat or enjoy the live swans and other birds inhabiting the park. You can catch a concert or a play in the Walt Disney Amphitheater, grab a bite to eat at "Erik's on Eola" or relax amid beautiful flower beds and a spectacular view of Orlando's skyline.

The Orlando Sentinel’s 101 Best features the best 101 picks of dining, shopping, entertainment and more, all selected by their readers.
