Mayor Dyer to Swear in Orlando’s New Police Chief

WHAT: In November, Mayor Buddy Dyer appointed Val Demings as the new Chief of Police of the Orlando Police Department. On Thursday, January 10, the official transfer of authority and responsibility from Chief McCoy to Chief Demings will take place with the time-honored Change of Command ceremony.

The Change of Command is a traditional ceremony that will mark the public transition from one Chief to the next. It marks a historic moment in the history of the City of Orlando as Chief Val Demings is sworn in as the 36th Police Chief and first female Chief in Orlando.

Mayor Dyer and Chief Demings will continue to dedicate all available resources to combating crime. Under new leadership, the Orlando Police Department will continue to incorporate new and innovative crime-fighting strategies, such as:

  • placing 75 additional police officers on our streets
  • removing more than 120 guns from our streets with the Illegal Gun Bounty program
  • targeting street level crime and drug dealing with “Operation Delta” – arresting more than 800 criminals
  • the creation of the Safe Orlando Task Force; and
  • deploying “Operation All Hands on Deck” – placing more street level patrols in the City’s “hot spots”

WHEN: Thursday, January 10 at 9:00 a.m.
Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for media to begin set-up
