EDGEWATER HIGH SCHOOL CREW TEAM TO BREAK GROUND ON NEW BOATHOUSE
ORLANDO, FL (August 14, 2003) – Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lake Fairview Beach will help the Edgewater High School Crew Team (Orlando Rowing Association, Inc.) break ground on a new boathouse. The new boathouse is a joint effort between the City of Orlando and the Orange County Parks & Recreation Department “Field of Dreams” grant. The City of Orlando is donating the use of a portion of the lakefront property and the Orange County Parks grant is providing $90,000 for the construction. After a brief presentation, Edgewater Crew will put on a rowing demonstration and lunch will follow. All rowers, coaches, parents and alums are invited. Edgewater Crew team was established in 1964, first practicing out of the Rollins College boathouse. In 1969, with the help of the VFW Post 2093 on Lake Fairview, the EHS rowers built their first boathouse. As the sport flourished, the team outgrew its existing almost 40-year-old boathouse. Edgewater Crew Team is one of the oldest high school programs in the state and supports almost 80 rowers yearly. Many seniors continue rowing in college on rowing scholarships. Edgewater parents have worked hard in this effort to build a new boathouse, and are thankful to the City of Orlando and Orange County for this opportunity.
