CITY OF ORLANDO PARTNERS WITH ORANGE COUNTY AND ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO
LAUNCH UNIQUE NEIGHBORHOOD AMENITIES

Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando City Commissioners Kick Off City Center Opening with Ivey Lane Elementary Students

WHAT: This Thursday, October 6, 2005, the City of Orlando in partnership with Orange County and Orange County Public Schools, will officially open the new Ivey Lane Park and Neighborhood Center.

The state-of-the-art park and neighborhood center is the sixth of 12 City community projects to be completed this year. The neighborhood center features a community room, teen room, kitchenette and 5-station computer lab. Additionally, park amenities include an amphitheater, walking trails, picnic pavilions, basketball courts, tennis courts, a baseball field, a soccer field and playgrounds.

To kick off the ceremony, the Ivey Lane Elementary School’s “Bright Knights” will entertain the audience with a live, vocal performance. Immediately following the traditional ribbon cutting with Mayor Dyer, guests will be invited – for the first time – to enjoy the park and neighborhood center’s amenities.

The neighborhood center offers programs for adults and children of all ages, and hours of operation are:
Monday – Friday from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sunday – Closed

Highlights of Ivey Lane’s Programs and Amenities Include:

Adult's Focus Group: 3rd Tues of each month (Free); 6: 30 - 7: 30 pm, and open to the public. -Parents meet monthly and share their ways/ideas of do's and don'ts with each other, to look at different avenues and measures of raising children in today’s society as well as meet new friends

Birthday Bash (5-11): Youth enjoy a fun filled monthly celebration for our OASIS participants the last day of each month from 4 pm - 5 pm

Book Club: Weeknights; 6 - 7: 30 pm, (Free) - Must be a member of the program; All books are chapter books and students must finish reading the entire book before they are recognized as a "Star Reader"; Participants keep the book, receive a food voucher from Chick Fil-A, and a coupon from "Books A Million" to go pick out any book of their choice, regardless of the price; Students are supervised nightly as they come in and read at their own pace; Books are donated by local libraries and bookstores

Computer Lab: Weekdays; 1 - 7: 30 pm & from 11 - 5: 30 pm, (Free) - Tap into the world of technology and boost your knowledge; come and brush up on your typing skills, complete resumes, surf the internet, etc

Dr Fun’s Super Saturday’s (ages 5 - 14): Join us for safe, fun-filled adventures that include- games, sports, arts and crafts and outdoor activities

Kids’ Club (ages 5-10): A monthly building adventure at Home Depot; Participants create items to take home and receive an apron, certificate and pin to commemorate their achievement and experience

Middle Teen Program (MTP) Club (ages 11 - 14): A teen program where youth can develop leadership skills and cultural diversity awareness; The program features workshops, regular meetings, community service projects, computers, tutoring, game room activities, art, field trips, puppets and athletic activities

Movie Mania: The 2nd & 4th Friday of the month; 6- 8 pm, (Free) - All movies are within the City's policy guidelines, bring a friend and receive a free bag of popcorn, hot-dogs, drinks and popcorn is served
