Deputy Chief Karin Weaver (407) 246-2423
MAYOR AND POLICE CHIEF LAUNCH ORLANDO
POLICE DEPARTMENT RECRUITING COMMUNITY PANEL
Date: Monday, November 14, 2005
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Location: Orlando Police Headquarters Building, in the Chief’s Conference
Room, at 100 S. Hughey Avenue, Orlando, Florida, 32801.
Mayor Buddy Dyer and Chief Michael McCoy have invited a panel of community and
business leaders to participate in the City’s latest initiative to gain public
involvement in how the Orlando Police Department recruits police officers. The
City’s goal is to fine-tune the hiring process to make it more effective and
representative of the community.
Dr. Stanley Stone, the Vice-President of Human Resources and Diversity at
Valencia Community College will chair the panel. On Monday, November 14, 2005,
at 0900 hours, the panel will meet for the first time in the Chief’s Conference
Room at the Orlando Police Headquarters building. Mayor Dyer and Chief McCoy
will address the panel at the start of the meeting and then a Recruiting Unit
staff member will give the panel an overview of the department’s staffing levels
and describe the hiring process.
This panel is very unique; unlike the vehicle pursuit panel, which focused on an
operational issue, this panel will examine the very important process of how the
department goes about choosing officers. Police agencies around the country
understand that by hiring good people from the beginning, future conduct and
discipline issues can be reduced. This community panel will have a rare
opportunity to shape the future character of the Orlando Police Department.
