Honor Guard

The Orlando Fire department Honor Guard was
formed in October 1997. Its first official event was the Bookhardt
Memorial Service on December 2, 1997, located at 42 W. Central
Boulevard.

The Honor Guard was formed as a Special Team
to properly honor any member of the Orlando Fire Department killed in
the Line of Duty. Since that time, the Honor Guard has become a valuable
public relations tool for the City of Orlando and a goodwill ambassador
for the Orlando Fire Department. The Honor Guard has represented the
City of Orlando at Firefighters funerals and memorials throughout the
country, from New York City to Houston and all across Florida. The Honor
Guard escorted Governor Jeb Bush on two occasions, as well as the Mayor
of New York City. The Honor Guard has opened many ceremonies and
conventions throughout the City of Orlando and Central Florida area by
presenting the Colors.
The
Honor Guard has participated in numerous Honor Guard Competitions and
has won:
-
First Place in "The Central Florida Fire
& Police Honor Guard Competition" in 2001, with Lt. Ian Davis
winning the "Commander Award",
-
First Place in "The Fire Rescue East
Regional National Honor Guard Competition" in 2001, with Lt. Ian Davis
winning the "Commander Award",
-
Third Place in "The Fire Rescue East
Regional National Honor Guard Competition" 2000, with Lt. James Hill
winning the "Commander Award".
The Honor Guard took a lead role in organizing the "first of its kind" Honor
Guard Academy for the State of Florida fire departments, held at the Florida
State Fire College in Ocala. The platoon (which took top honors) was led by
Lt. Daniel Fleming and the "Top Gun" instructor was Lt. James Hill.
