History - Evolution of GIS at the City of Orlando

About Orlando GIS
This page describes what GIS is and what services are available through the City of Orlando's GIS Program.

What is GIS?

GIS is an acronym for "geographic information system".

Here is a technical description:

A computer system designed to allow users to collect, manage, and analyze large volumes of spatially referenced and associated attribute data. GIS's are used for solving complex research, planning, and management problems.

The major components of a GIS are: a user interface, system/data base management capability, data base creation/data-entry capacity, spatial data manipulation and analysis package, and display generation function.

Here is a non-technical description:

The GIS group uses computers to create maps, gather and analyze data, and create reports for various departments and citizens throughout the City.

What does GIS do for Orlando?

Orlando GIS works within the Technology Management Division of the City's General Administration Department. We create and maintain geographic data for Planning, Public Works,  Survey, Engineering, Permitting, Public Safety systems, Mayor Initiatives and other municipal government activities. We also provide specialized cartography for many programs within the city.

Improvements in GIS technology and skills, allows for a more efficient government. GIS also improves response time for Emergency Services which provides better public safety for the citizens of Orlando.
