Flood Map Update Project in Orlando
Important changes are occurring in the
City of Orlando. A multi-year project to re-examine flood zones and
develop detailed digital flood hazard maps is nearing completion. This
effort is part of the national map modernization project to produce more
reliable flood risk data and report it in a digital format. This new
format will enable communities to overlay and analyze flood data with
street patterns, stormwater facilities and existing property
improvements. In Orlando, surface water flow and drainage patterns have
changed significantly in the 32 years since the first Flood Hazard Maps
were produced for our area.
These changes are related to land
development, erosion, land use, and other natural forces. However, the
existing Flood Hazard Maps have not kept up with these changes and do
not reflect current flood risks. In addition, new technology has
provided much more detailed terrain modeling that translates to more
accurate floodplain mapping. In response to this need the City, Orange
County, various other local communities and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) have revised the Flood Hazard Maps, also known
as Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM).
The new maps are preliminary maps and
will not affect insurance costs or requirements until after a period of
public review has occurred and the community has officially adopted
them, this is anticipated to occur by February 2008. These updated
digital flood maps will allow property owners to make better financial
decisions about protecting themselves and their property. The maps also
will help community officials, engineers, builders and others to make
important determinations about where and how new structures and
developments should be built. As a result, our community will be a safer
place to live.
