Performs skilled, journey level work in the installation, preventive maintenance and repair of air conditioning equipment. An employee assigned to this class conducts regular inspections of air conditioning units, makes operating adjustments, lubricates units and changes filters. Work also requires the inspection of malfunctioning units, testing of equipment, diagnosis of problems, repair or replacement of parts, and replacement of refrigerant. Employee works under general supervision, usually alone, and exercises reasonable initiative and independent judgment in scheduling work and in determining action to be taken. Work is reviewed through inspection of work completed, reports from users of equipment, study of work reports and analysis of operating and maintenance costs.
Performs regular inspection of air conditioning units, adjusts controls, lubricates moving parts, changes filters, and replaces refrigerant.

Responds to service calls, inspects and tests malfunctioning units using such instruments as ammeter, volt meter, ohm meter and compound gauge, diagnoses problems, repairs or replaces parts on site, or removes units and transports to repair shop for repair or replacement of parts. Contacts contractors for repair work if equipment is under warranty or if extent of needed repair warrants, and assists them in repair work.

Tests air conditioning equipment for leaks, silver solders piping connection, fittings and couplings, repairs or adjusts valves.

Replaces defective parts of air conditioning units, such as compressors, thermostats, switches, fan motors and belts.

Installs new air conditioning units, coordinates the work of masons, carpenters and electricians, as needed.

Operates power tools in maintenance and repair work, including such shop tools as drill press, grinder and bench saw.

Operates panel type service vehicle; operates two-way radio.

If assigned to work on central air conditioning systems, inspects units, diagnoses trouble, makes repairs to air handling equipment, cleans condenser coils, replaces bearings, replaces and aligns pulley wheels, and replaces and adjusts belts, checks temperature and functioning of cooling towers, cleans and lubricates moving parts.

May service related refrigeration equipment such as water coolers, ice machines and refrigerators.

Maintains records on service and repair of equipment, prepares work reports.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, test instruments and tools employed in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.


Considerable knowledge of the physical principles and operating characteristics of air conditioning, including reverse cycle and refrigeration equipment.

Knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance requirements of cooling towers.

Knowledge of basic electrical principles and practices, including knowledge of electrical switches, relays, controls, motors and similar equipment.

Knowledge of safety hazards and of proper safety precautions to be employed in air conditioning service and repair.

Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.

Skilled in testing, making repairs and operating adjustments to compressors, valves, thermostats and controls of air conditioning units.

Skilled in preparing and maintaining records and reports.

Ability to work independently, without assistance or immediate supervision.

Ability to lift construction materials and supplies.

Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions, and to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Ability to read blueprints and schematics.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department officials, other employees, contractors and vendors, and the general public.

May require the ability to work in high or confined areas and the ability to climb (ladders, stairs and/or hills).
High school graduate plus four (4) years experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, and air conditioning systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
