Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

On December 17, Chief Val Demings became the first female Chief of Police for the City of Orlando. The transfer of authority and responsibility from Chief McCoy to Chief Demings will take place on Thursday, January 10 at 9 a.m. at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center with the time-honored Change of Command ceremony. The Change of Command is a traditional ceremony that will mark the public transition of the leadership change. It marks a historic moment in the history of the City of Orlando as Chief Val Demings is sworn in as the 36th Police Chief and first female Chief in Orlando.

In her new role, Chief Demings is focused on enhancing our crime-prevention efforts through greater citizen participation in prevention programs. Your first opportunity to get involved and meet face-to-face with Chief Demings is next week as we host the “Meet the Chief” series. Be sure to check out the “Public Safety Update” section to find the meeting closest to you.

Over the past few years, we have worked relentlessly to keep our neighborhoods safe. I am confident in Chief Demings’ ability to lead OPD, effectively combating the crime of today and ensuring the safety of our community tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor
