Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

You are invited to Orlando’s second annual Blues-B-Q, a celebration of blues music and barbecue at City Hall Plaza, this Saturday, February 2, from 2 to 9 p.m. The concert features The Robert Cray Band and Koko Taylor, "The Queen of the Blues" as well as Central Florida’s own blues acts Kaleigh Baker, Road Block and Soul Cactus.

The night wouldn't be complete without a sampling of some smokin' barbecue from Sonny’s BBQ, Porkie’s BBQ and Bubbalou’s Bodacious BBQ, which will be available for purchase.

Last year’s event had over 10,000 participants, and this year’s plans to be even larger. Make your way down to City Hall Plaza at the corner of South Street and Orange Avenue and enjoy this free concert. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

This section of City News provides public safety updates on new and ongoing City initiatives and opportunities for citizens to become engaged in their neighborhoods.

OPD Online Reporting

The Orlando Police Department has initiated a new service on CityofOrlando.net that allows residents to file certain police reports online. These include lost property, harassing phone calls, pickpocketing, vandalism, petit theft and vehicle theft.

This enhanced feature provides a convenient way for people to file reports on these crimes. After filing the report, a resident will receive a temporary case number and can print out an unofficial copy of the report.

OPD Online Reporting is not to be used for emergencies, incidents involving a gun, incidents where you know the suspect, or incidents that take place outside the Orlando City limits. OPD Online Reporting is listed under “Online Services” on CityofOrlando.net and on the Orlando Police Department home page.

Lake Nona Substation Grand Opening

January 25, Commissioner Diamond and Orlando Police Chief Val Demings opened the City’s fourth community substation. The Lake Nona Community Police Office will serve the growing Southeast section of the City. The Lake Nona Community Police Office is located at 10727 Narcoossee Road.

Orlando Wetlands Festival

Enjoy the Ninth Annual Orlando Wetlands Park Festival on Saturday, February 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include guided birding and wilderness hikes, bus tours, live wild animals, Talako Indian Dancers, entertainment, a bounce house, face painting and more.

The Wetlands Park is a great place to relax and enjoy nature. The most popular activities are bird-watching, nature photography, jogging and bicycling. Nature enthusiasts will be greeted by 1,650 acres of hardwood hammocks, marshes and lakes. The Orlando Easterly Wetlands represents the world’s first large scale, constructed wetland treatment system designed to polish nutrients from reclaimed water. It is truly a “green” project, serving to protect our communities’ vital water resources by reducing potentially harmful nutrients in a safe, natural, effective method.

Directions: To get to the Park, take S.R. 50 to Christmas, Florida. Turn north onto 420, Ft. Christmas Road, and travel 2.3 miles, then turn onto Wheeler Road and travel 1.5 miles. The address is 25155 Wheeler Road, Christmas, Florida 32709.
