Mayor's
Message |
|
Dear Friend,
Orlando has been selected to serve as the host
city for the National League of Cities “2008
Congress of Cities” annual convention.
Central Florida will be center stage as we host
more than 5,000 delegates from around the
country, November 11-15, 2008 at the Orlando
World Center Marriott. The convention represents
a unique opportunity to showcase our community
to elected officials, policy makers, municipal
employees and their families. As part of the
program, our region will become an “interactive
learning lab” where delegates are able see many
of the initiatives, best practices and
public/private partnerships that are helping to
better the quality of life for Central
Floridians.
We
want you to be a part of this exciting event.
There will be a number of ways for citizens to
get engaged with the 2008 annual convention
including various volunteer opportunities.
Additional conference details will be included
in future issues of City News.
In
the meantime, I want to thank you for your
continued support in our effort to make Orlando
the next great American city of this new
century.
Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

the Parramore Kidz Zone have partnered to launch a summer soccer league.

children of Parramore are invited to participate.
The soccer league is the latest in the
Parramore Kidz Zone’s efforts to link the children of Orlando’s
poverty-stricken neighborhood to pre-kindergarten education, health
care, youth jobs, mentoring, tutoring and after school activities such
as sports, arts and technology programs.
The league is held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the John H. Jackson Community

Orlando is a ‘Solar
American City’
The City of
Orlando, in partnership with OUC and Orange
County, has received a $200,000 grant from the
U.S. Department of Energy. Orlando was among
only 12 cities to be designated a ‘Solar
American City.’ The grants, along with technical
expertise, are being offered to develop solar
projects that can be replicated across the
country.
OUC is making it
easier for customers to switch to solar, too, by
partnering with Orlando Federal Credit Union to
offer low interest loan options for solar
installations and providing a monthly production
credit to customers for the energy their systems
produce.
To learn how you
can switch to solar in your home, visit ouc.com/green/solar_pilots.htm

Dubsdread Grand Re-Opening
Mayor
Buddy Dyer and the Orlando City Council are
hosting the grand re-opening of the Dubsdread
Golf Course on Thursday, July 10, 2008.
Orlando’s golf course since 1924, Dubsdread
earned its name because the original owner
wanted to instill dread in “dubs,” or novice
golfers. Nestled within the College Park
Neighborhood, Dubsdread has hosted players like
Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Claude Harmon. The
re-opening is in honor of the recent renovations
to further improve the course rated Orlando’s
best public course, 2005 by Orlando Magazine
readers.
Corporate foursomes with tee
sponsorships, foursomes and individual players
are invited to take part in this historic event.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on July 10, and
the opening ceremonies occur at 9 a.m. At 9:30
a.m. there will be a shotgun start, and
following the tournament there will be an awards
reception at The Tap Room at Dubsdread.
Registration fee includes:
- Entry fee
- Continental breakfast,
beverages and snacks
- Post-tournament reception
- Contests, prizes, awards
and commemorative gift bag
For more information on the
opening day activities, contact Erin Durning at

Fifth Annual National Arts Show
The
Orlando Arts Committee in cooperation with the
City of Orlando is recognizing the artistic
talents of both City employees and their
relatives through the Fifth Annual National Arts
Program exhibit. Participants have the wonderful
opportunity to publicly display their work and
compete for prizes and continuing arts
scholarships. The exhibit will be on display
June 16 to August 31 in the Terrace Gallery on
the first floor of City Hall, on the second
floor and in the Mayor’s Gallery on the third
floor of City Hall.
For 26 consecutive years, The
National Arts Program has been committed to
unleashing people’s artistic potential by
providing them a venue to showcase their talent.
One of the primary aims of the program is to
highlight the work of employees and their
relatives. The National Arts Program has
provided this opportunity to more than 450 large
and small cities, counties, airports, hospitals
and other organizations. Producing about 20,000
pieces of art a year, these mediums of art
consist of paintings, sculpture, photography and
craft. The National Arts Program not only offers
a venue for people to showcase their skill but
also engages the community in a creative way.
